After my recent article on dealing with thin hair, I got tons of requests from guys on the opposite side of the spectrum - those with long, thick hair that's wild, grows at lightning speed, and can be, well...unmanageable. Luckily, I'm part of this “thick hair team,” so I can share some tried-and-true methods that have helped me handle my mane.

Here’s the truth: taming thick hair isn’t an overnight fix. What works for one person might not work for another, given the variety of hair textures out there. But with these tips, you’ll hopefully have a smoother start to your morning routine!
Daily Hair Care Routine
First off, thick hair demands a good care routine, starting with daily washing. Shampooing alone won’t cut it - you need a conditioner to keep your hair and scalp hydrated, which softens your hair’s cuticle layer, making it much more manageable.

Using conditioner is simple: after rinsing out your shampoo, apply a small amount of conditioner evenly throughout your hair. Massage it into your scalp with your fingertips for 1-2 minutes, then rinse.

Sticking to a matching shampoo-conditioner set, like those from Baxter of California or Hanz de Fuko, gives you great results. Both brands offer subtle scents, and their conditioners leave your hair feeling soft without any heavy, greasy residue.
Find the Right Style for Your Hair Type
Finding a hairstyle that works with your face shape is essential, but with thick hair, it’s just as crucial to think about how much time you’re willing to spend on styling every day. Thick hair needs regular upkeep, ideally with cuts every two weeks since it grows fast, especially on the sides and back.

Short hairstyles with thinning or texturizing help manage volume, making styling far easier. If you’re opting for a style that uses wax or another product, ask your barber for tips on the right application technique. This ensures you can style it quickly each morning without hassle.

Apply Wax Only to Dry Hair
One critical rule: always apply styling wax to dry hair. Wet hair won’t hold product properly and will lose shape fast. Dry hair, on the other hand, absorbs product evenly, allowing you to work the style through with ease.

For really unruly hair, a mini flat iron can be helpful for smoothing out strands. It works fast, but be cautious - it’s more intense than a blow dryer and can be damaging over time. To protect your hair, apply a heat-protection spray like a Sea Salt Spray.

Think twice before reaching for that mini hair straightener.
