Embrace the Military Trend: Style Tips for a Rugged Look

Writer's picture: Tom GoedhartTom Goedhart

Calling military-inspired fashion a "trend" might be a stretch - it’s been a staple in men’s wardrobes for years, even if you didn’t realize it.

This iconic style, known for its rugged and masculine appeal, is perfect for guys who want a bold, no-nonsense look. Personally, I think military fashion shines brightest in winter, with key pieces like trench coats, cargo pants, and sturdy boots built to combat the cold. So, how many of these essentials are already in your closet?

Trench Coat

Originally created by Burberry, the trench coat is a true icon. Over the years, it’s evolved, with versions now available from high-end brands to affordable names like Zara, H&M, and French Connection. You’ll see it making an appearance every year, with only minor tweaks to its timeless design.

What makes the trench coat so versatile is how effortlessly it pairs with just about everything. Wear it over a shirt and tie for formal vibes or throw it over a T-shirt and jeans for a casual edge. Just don’t pair it with shorts - leave that for another look. A dark green trench coat is the epitome of military style, while beige, navy, and black are perennial favorites that never go out of style.

Bomber jacket

Born from the need to keep pilots warm, the bomber jacket has transitioned beautifully into everyday wear. Its signature features - a round, baseball-style collar and elasticated cuffs, hem, and collar - make it instantly recognizable. Classic designs also include a small zip pocket on the arm for an authentic touch.

As its popularity grew, so did the variations. You can now find bomber jackets in wool, with shearling-lined collars, extra zippers, or other creative twists. Whatever the material, this jacket remains a go-to for effortless style.

Pea Coat

With roots in 19th-century naval uniforms, the pea coat has cemented its place in men’s fashion since World War II. Known for its double-breasted design and distinctive navy blue color, it exudes a nautical charm that’s hard to miss.

When shopping for a pea coat, aim for one with a high wool content for maximum warmth. Just be prepared - while it’ll keep you toasty, the price tag might leave you a little cold. 😉

Cargo Pants

Nothing screams military style like cargo pants. But leave the oversized, bulky-pocketed versions in the past. Modern cargo pants feature streamlined pockets that add just enough detail without overwhelming your outfit.

The slimmed-down design makes them surprisingly versatile - you can even pair them with a blazer for a sharp, rugged twist. Just remember: those pockets are mostly decorative, so don’t overload them and ruin the clean lines.

Boots

No military-inspired outfit is complete without a solid pair of boots. They’re the ultimate finishing touch, adding toughness and character to your look. But balance is key. Wearing heavy combat boots with a bomber jacket and cargo pants might feel overdone and clunky.

Instead, tone things down. Pair your boots with regular jeans or chinos, a simple shirt or T-shirt, and a trench coat to pull it all together with style.
