Flawless Looks: Haircuts That Enhance Your Natural Features

Previously, I covered choosing hairstyles for different face shapes. Today, let’s dive deeper into how specific hairstyles can balance out unique head shapes - or, as stylists might say, skull shapes.

Our skull structures vary quite a bit. If you’ve got a naturally rounded head, consider yourself as lucky as someone with an oval face. But if you’ve got a high forehead, flat nape, pointed crown, or other distinct head shapes, these are subtle characteristics that the right hairstyle can enhance or soften.

Here’s a breakdown of hairstyles to help balance out these “challenging” shapes:

High Forehead

MASS

For those with high foreheads, avoid letting side hair grow too straight and vertical, as it emphasizes forehead height. Instead, let the side hair grow a bit and brush it diagonally to create a “horizontal line” effect. This softens the forehead’s appearance.

Avoid slicked-back or tight comb styles; instead, opt for volume-rich styles like a pompadour, quiff, or side-swept bangs. Or, for an easygoing look, let the bangs fall gently, brushing the forehead - a subtle trick that works well with colder seasons.

Pointed Crown

Some think longer hair easily covers a pointed crown, but that’s usually counterproductive. Extra length can just add to the height of the crown.

A better approach is an undercut or closely-cropped sides and back, with the top hair trimmed to reach past the nose, creating a thick “shield” that covers the crown without adding volume.

Puffed Nape

Here, balance is everything. Thin out the nape area while keeping the front hair longer and fuller. Think of tousled, spiked styles where top hair adds “weight” to complement the nape.

Flat Nape

With a flat nape, focus on camouflaging with thicker hair at the back. Side hair should be long enough to create a consistent look with the back, making side-part, slick-back, or pompadour styles ideal choices.

Low Forehead

For low foreheads, high-volume hairstyles work wonders. You’ll want styles that create vertical height for the forehead, such as longer cuts slightly swept back. A French crop with bold styling on top can add interest without exposing the forehead too much. For extra effort, consider a light curl for added lift and volume.

Finding the right hairstyle to enhance or balance out your facial structure can make a significant impact.
