Big Guy Style: What to Wear When You’re on the Heavier Side

Updated: Oct 9, 2024

As promised, I’m back with more tips for gentlemen who might be feeling a bit on the heavier side. Unlike their slimmer counterparts, choosing clothes that flatter this body type can be quite the challenge. A single misstep can make any flaws more noticeable. But let’s be clear: being overweight doesn’t mean you can’t dress well or look good!

Of course, the ultimate goal is a balanced diet and regular exercise to shed those extra pounds and achieve a fit physique. In the meantime, selecting the right attire can significantly boost your confidence.

For those who often resort to dark colors, let's explore some effective strategies to elevate your style.

Prioritize Well-Fitting Clothes

This is the golden rule for any body type - whether you’re thin, overweight, tall, or short. The secret to success lies in clothes that fit well. Many men with larger frames mistakenly think that oversized clothing is the way to hide excess fat. Unfortunately, this approach can make you look sloppy and bulkier. Similarly, opting for clothes that are too tight can segment your body in an unflattering way.

If you’re not completely confident, consider slightly looser fits, but don’t go overboard! Aim for regular-fit clothes in your true size to achieve the right balance between comfort and style.

Avoid Bold Patterns

I get it; the urge to swap out dark clothing for a vibrant, patterned shirt can be tempting. However, be careful here; you don’t want your excess weight to become the center of attention. Stay away from large patterns and overly bright colors.

If you love patterns, go for smaller designs in harmonious, subdued colors that won’t draw too much attention.

Embrace Long Pants

Put away the shorts and cropped pants for now. With a wider build, you need clothing that elongates your figure. Long pants are your best bet, as they have a natural lengthening effect. Choose pants that cover your heels, as they can help improve your overall height.

The ideal pant styles are slim-fit or regular-fit to balance out your frame, especially since most guys in this category tend to have robust legs.

Opt for Lightweight Fabrics

Steer clear of shiny, thick fabrics that can add bulk. Instead, choose lightweight materials like linen, cotton, or khaki. And don’t fret about looking less formal; polo shirts, linen shirts, chinos, or linen blazers are excellent options that maintain sophistication while keeping you comfortable and looking lighter.

Go for Single-Breasted Blazers

If you’re larger in stature, double-breasted blazers are best avoided, as they can make your midsection appear wider. On the other hand, single-breasted blazers create a more tailored and slimming silhouette. Plus, they tend to look younger and fresher than their double-breasted counterparts.

Dark Colors and Monochrome Outfits

This is the most fundamental tip for dressing a larger body type. Dark colors can help you appear slimmer and more streamlined, and this is a straightforward approach. Monochrome outfits are also a versatile option for overweight men; they can make you look more compact while providing flexibility in style. You can be incredibly formal in monochrome or stylishly trendy, depending on how you accessorize.

Choose Larger Accessories

Instead of going for small accessories that can get lost on a larger frame, opt for bigger pieces. Large accessories help balance your proportions and create harmony in your overall look. Plus, they draw attention in a way that flatters rather than overwhelms.

With these tips in mind, dressing well is within reach, no matter your size. Remember, style is about feeling confident in what you wear!
