Shirts and blazers are the cornerstone of every guy’s wardrobe, but they come with a maintenance challenge. Ideally, you’d hang them up to keep them looking fresh, but what if closet space is tight? And what about when you need to pack them for a business trip or getaway? Not everyone has time to iron out creases after unpacking.
If you’re like most guys, you may not have a specific method for folding clothes - especially for dress shirts, blazers, or suits. No worries; I’ve got you covered. Here’s how to keep them neat and wrinkle-free.
Shirts
The essentials for every wardrobe. Here’s how to fold a shirt to minimize wrinkles:
Button up the shirt fully, turn it face-down, and lay it flat.
Fold the right sleeve over toward the left shoulder.
Align the sleeve straight towards the collar, folding the cuff down.
Repeat with the left sleeve, layering it over the right.
Fold the right side almost to the collar.
Do the same with the left side.
Fold the bottom up about a third of the way.
Fold once more, leaving a slight gap from the collar.
Flip it over, and you’ll see it looks just like it came off a store display.
Blazers
Lay the blazer flat and smooth out any wrinkles.
Optionally, pin the front and back panels together for a crisp fold. Avoid pins on delicate fabrics.
Lay it face down.
Fold the left side to the center, smoothing the sleeve along the fold.
Repeat with the right side, aligning the sleeves.
Do the same for the right side. The goal is to have both sleeves folded parallel to each other, gently touching as shown in the picture.
Place the trousers on top of the blazer with the waistband to one side.
Fold it over one more time.
Place the trousers over the top of the blazer that’s already laid out. Make sure the waistband faces either left or right.
Pull the bottom of the blazer up to cover the trousers completely.
All done!
For an extra wrinkle guard, place the folded items in zip-lock bags with a bit of air for cushioning. When you arrive at your destination, hang everything up as soon as possible. If all else fails, grab the hotel room iron for a touch-up.
