Some people can throw on a simple t-shirt and jeans and still look effortlessly cool, outshining others who might be dressed in a suit. These individuals seem to radiate a blend of confidence, ease, and intentional style without even trying.
Like it or not, most of us aspire to that kind of effortless coolness. For some, it comes naturally - whether it’s their good looks, fit physique, or social influence. But for the majority of us, achieving that look takes time and effort. It’s not a matter of just copying what we see and expecting the same result - there’s more to it than that.
While I’ve covered style in depth before, fashion is constantly changing, and my own views on it continue to evolve. So, here are a few updated tips on how to step up your style, heading into 2022.
Avoid Filling Your Closet with "Easy" Clothes
How do you consistently dress well? The key is not to give yourself the option to dress poorly. If your closet is full of hoodies, baggy tees, and running shoes, you’re prioritizing comfort over style. Don’t get me wrong - comfort matters, but everything in moderation. For instance, I’ll only wear an oversized hoodie at home. When I head out, I swap it for a better-fitted hoodie under a denim jacket or coat.
And remember, "dressing well" doesn’t always mean dressing formally. You can look stylish in casual clothing if it fits well and suits the occasion.
Invest in Timeless Pieces
Think of high-quality clothing as an investment. Well-made pieces crafted from natural materials like leather or wool not only last longer but also age beautifully.
Leather, for example, becomes softer and more unique over time. Denim develops its own character the more it’s worn. Even wool suits can last a lifetime with proper care. The upfront cost may be higher, but it’s a long-term gain.
Dress for the Weather
Every winter, I have a small morning ritual: sticking my hand outside to feel the temperature and decide how to layer up. It’s simple, but more effective than relying on a weather app, which can be misleading. Dressing based on the actual weather conditions keeps you comfortable and ensures your style choices are practical for the day.
Make Dressing Well a Routine
If you’ve been dressing casually for a while, you might get teased when you start stepping up your wardrobe. Don’t let that hold you back. Change takes time, and you need to build the habit of dressing better each day.
Once you commit to dressing neatly, you’ll notice it opens up new opportunities - both socially and professionally.
Don’t Chase Every Trend
Stylish people master the art of balance. They stay aware of trends but never let them overshadow their personal style.
Feel free to experiment with new trends, but make sure your wardrobe’s foundation is solid. Once you’ve got the basics down, you can play around with seasonal or trendy pieces without losing your core style.
