Summer and t-shirts are basically inseparable. This classic piece is so simple and universal that it barely needs an introduction. A well-fitted t-shirt lets you highlight those toned arms and that summer tan. With countless styles and designs out there, no two t-shirts are exactly the same.
From long, short, to even cropped (if you’re bold), the length of a t-shirt can make or break your outfit.
The focus here is on your traditional t-shirt, skipping the longline trend for now.
If a t-shirt runs too long, it can make your body look wider and shorter than it is. The hem ends up covering your hips, giving you a boxy, spread-out look. On the flip side, if it's too short, you'll experience the dreaded “shrinking” effect. Not only will you unintentionally show some skin, but it’s even worse if you're self-conscious about your waistline.
So how do you find the perfect t-shirt length? While I wish there was a one-size-fits-all answer, the truth is every guy’s build is different. What works for one might not work for another. But here’s a quick guide to help you figure it out:
Start by throwing on a t-shirt, like you normally would - head through the neck, arms in the sleeves, and gently pull the hem down. Now, stand in front of a mirror and raise one arm, like you’re waving. If your belly starts to show, the t-shirt is probably too short. Ideally, the hem should only reveal the waistband of your pants.
Next, check the back. Let the t-shirt fall naturally, and if the hem hits right at the top of your butt, you’ve got a winner. Another handy rule: the hem should sit about 3cm above the bottom of your back pockets.
Now, how many of your t-shirts pass the test?
