Fashion Moves You Should’ve Made Ages Ago

When it comes to style, there are classic rules that every guy should know before thinking of breaking the mold. Basics like ensuring clothes fit well, keeping ties at belt level, and having shorts that hit just above the knee have been passed down through the ages. Following these fundamentals helps you sidestep easy fashion mistakes.

But as in any field, breaking the rules can be the real fun part. Some combinations that might look odd on paper end up delivering unique, standout looks. Ready to shake things up? Here are some style moves you might want to try.

Hoodie + Blazer/Suit Jacket

The old rulebook would’ve frowned on pairing a hoodie with a blazer. But today, blending “high” items like blazers with “low” ones like hoodies gives you a fresh, youthful edge. Avoid overly flashy or bulky hoodies; stick to simple, neutral-toned ones in lightweight fabrics. This way, your blazer still keeps its sharp shape.

T-Shirts + Blazer/Suit Jacket

Like hoodies, t-shirts can look effortlessly cool under a blazer. Simplify your choice by sticking to neutral tees that match the blazer’s color tone. For instance, try a gray tee with a charcoal blazer or a white tee with beige. Striped tees also work for that added bit of style.

Boots + Suit

Dress shoes aren’t the only option with suits - boots, especially Chelsea or brogue styles, can add a whole new vibe. Chelsea boots, in particular, are versatile enough to pair with almost anything, from trousers to jeans.

Bold Pattern Mixing

Tradition says to play it safe: one bold pattern, the rest plain. But if you’re feeling daring, go for pattern-on-pattern. Try a larger check with a smaller stripe, or mix a vertical stripe shirt with a gingham tie. It’s about balance and creating visual interest.

Black and Navy Together

There’s no reason these two dark tones can’t get along. Pair a black shirt with navy pants, or vice versa, for a refined twist on an all-black look. Add white sneakers for a lighter, more modern finish.

Tie It Up with Any Jacket

Who says a tie has to be saved for a full suit? Switch things up by pairing a tie with more casual jackets like a safari jacket, a cardigan, or even a denim jacket. It’s an easy way to redefine formal style.
