Sale Season: Tips for Staying Sane and Saving Big

Who doesn’t appreciate snagging a great deal? Especially when that jacket you’ve been coveting suddenly shows up with a “50% off” tag. However, if you lack discipline, sale season can quickly become a chaotic mess.

The goal of hunting for sales is to save money, not to end up with a pile of items you’ll rarely wear just because they were cheap. 😅 Here are some essential survival tips to navigate the sale frenzy!

When is the Best Time to Shop for Sales?

Retailers typically operate on a strict schedule, making it easier to predict when sales will occur. As seasons change, brands often need to clear out old inventory to make room for new styles.

You can usually expect two major sales each year: Spring/Summer (late July to early August) and Fall/Winter (mid-December to January). Nowadays, many brands announce and promote their sales in advance, allowing you to prepare and keep an eye on your favorite items ahead of time.

Should You Wait for Deeper Discounts?

As sale seasons progress, prices often drop even further, especially as brands introduce "Extra Sale" promotions on already discounted items. If you can wait, doing so can lead to even better deals - just make sure the item you want is still available in your size. If you’re on the smaller side (XXS) or larger side (XXL), your chances of finding a great deal at the end of the season increase. 😉

Take Inventory of Your Wardrobe

Identify the gaps in your wardrobe. What items are you missing? Make a list to help guide your shopping.

For instance, you might realize you need a classic pair of black jeans that were previously too pricey, or you hesitated to buy a blazer last summer because of the heat. Sale season is the perfect opportunity to fill those gaps!

Double Up on Basics

Investing in basic, essential items during sales is always a smart move.

White T-shirts, light blue or striped button-downs, navy or beige chinos, socks, and underwear are versatile staples you can wear repeatedly without worrying about trends.

Stick to the Right Size

It’s tempting to buy items that are slightly oversized just because they’re heavily discounted, but resist the urge. Oversized shirts and pants might seem like a steal at 70-80% off, but if you think, “I’ll just get it altered,” consider that this may end up costing you more and could change the fit of the garment.

Pay Attention to Usability

Clothing is designed for specific seasons. A T-shirt bought in summer will likely be lighter than one from a fall collection. Similarly, pants from a late-year line will be heavier to help combat the cold.

When hunting for sales, keep in mind that you might not be able to wear certain items immediately, which is another reason to prioritize those basic pieces. 😆
