For those of you always on the lookout for new pomade adventures, Schmiere might ring a bell. This German brand has been buzzing on the scene, not just because Germany isn’t traditionally known for pomade but for its bold design - a black raven as its iconic mascot.
One thing that sets Schmiere apart is its extensive product lineup, with around 16 variations in total. Head over to their site (http://www.rumble59.com/Schmiere/Pomades-Hair-Care.html), and you might just lose track!
Today, with a nod from HairBros, I’m diving into Schmiere’s two core offerings: Strong and Medium. Let’s keep it simple by their hold levels since the German labeling can get confusing. And here’s something to note - Schmiere is generous with quantity, giving you a solid 140ml in each tin. Even if you’ve got hair down to your lips, a single tin might take months to use up.
Each tin’s illustrated instructions are pure comic book style - a fun touch.
Schmiere Pomade Strong
A heavyweight pomade, Schmiere Strong is promising from the start, with the raven on the lid sporting a slicked-back look that screams “super hold.”
The pomade itself is lemon-yellow and has a refreshing, fruity scent that’s a blend of orange and lemon - ideal for the hot summer. Among the sea of minty, essential oil-scented pomades, this one stands out with its fresh sweetness.
When you open the tin, the pomade feels firm at first touch, but it’s easy to scoop with a bit of pressure. It softens into a paste-like texture as you rub it between your palms, becoming smooth, slightly sticky, and ready to style.
Now, while you might think a strong-hold pomade would be a breeze to style, it takes a bit of work, especially for my side-swept, pompadour-meets-side-part look. It took me almost five minutes to get the style I wanted, starting with a comb and finishing with my fingers for a natural finish. For those who like a toned-down shine, Schmiere Strong delivers; it gives a slight sheen that fades within 2-3 hours. The hold is solid but not rigid, letting you easily restyle after taking off a helmet. Keep a comb handy, though, as it can get a bit sticky to the touch.
On thick, longer hair (down to my nose), Schmiere Strong holds up for about 6 hours, with some strands falling as the day goes on - especially in the summer heat. I imagine this pomade would be perfect for cooler days as a “secret weapon.” And even though it’s oil-based, it surprisingly rinses out easily with a single wash!
Schmiere Pomade Medium
With a wavy-haired raven on the lid, Schmiere Medium signals versatility—a pomade that suits different styles.
This pomade is light blue with a bold almond scent, which may be strong for some. Its texture is significantly softer and smoother than Schmiere Strong, melting easily in your palms and spreading evenly through your hair. After applying, your hair feels smooth, not sticky, and is easy to comb through.
The more you add, the more pliable your hair feels, giving some flexibility and keeping the strands close. Schmiere Medium has a nice medium shine and offers a touch of moisture, like Reuzel Pink or Green.
Schmiere Medium isn’t a heavy-duty pomade, so it gives a moderate hold with a bit of bounce.
It’s not as tight against the scalp, making it ideal for longer hair styled into pompadours or slick-backs, with hold lasting about 4 hours. If you’re rocking a side part, however, it might lose its shape within a few hours, especially after helmet use.
Post-helmet, my hair still looked pretty decent with just a few tweaks.
While Schmiere may be oil-based, both Strong and Medium rinse out easily. They’re great for Vietnamese hair textures and definitely worth a shot, especially if you’re into classic hairstyles and unique pomades. Or maybe it’s just that striking raven logo on a sturdy tin that pulls you in - either way, these are two essentials you’ll want on your shelf.
