Squid Game Ignites a Global Fashion Craze

While Squid Game may not tick every box for being a cinematic masterpiece, director Hwang Dong Hyuk masterfully delivers a survival narrative that captivates audiences worldwide. Its gripping curiosity-driven plot has catapulted this Korean drama to the number-one spot in 90 countries, positioning it as Netflix’s potential all-time most-watched show.

In the series, the contestants don teal tracksuits numbered 001 to 456, paired with clean white slip-ons, creating an unmistakable visual identity. Meanwhile, the guards sport striking hot pink jumpsuits and masks featuring circle, square, and triangle emblems - turning these seemingly simple designs into global pop culture icons.

Since its debut on September 17, everything related to Squid Game has gone viral: dalgona candies, the eerie giant doll, and yes, the once-basic uniforms of the 456 players. According to fashion data from Lyst, the show has sparked an explosive rise in related searches. "Retro tracksuit" queries are up by 97%, while "white slip-on shoes" have soared by 145%. Even "numbered white t-shirt" searches have increased by 35%, and interest in "teal" has surged by 130%. Vans white slip-ons, in particular, have become a runaway hit, trending as the internet’s latest obsession.

Adding fuel to the fire, luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton wasted no time in announcing Jung Ho-yeon, the breakout star of Squid Game, as their new global ambassador.

Fashion trends born from television are nothing new - think Stranger Things and Bridgerton. But Squid Game hit its stride at the perfect moment. Highsnobiety reports that outfits inspired by the show are poised to dominate the Halloween season, making its influence as timely as it is stylish.
