"Tangled" – The Men's Hair Trend Dominating 2016

As predicted in the recent hair trend report for 2016, one thing's clear: too much of the same gets old fast. It feels like we’ve seen enough of those polished, slicked-back styles like pompadours and classic slick-backs, right? Time to shake things up. Hair trends, much like fashion, have a cyclical nature, always coming back with a fresh twist. This year, the standout keyword for men’s hair is “tangled.”

Short and Spiky Hair

Building off a trend that swept across Europe late last year, this style features medium-length hair with a natural look. The short, spiky cut keeps things sharp with a 2-3 cm length in the middle that’s cut into distinct spikes for that textured, interwoven effect. The trick here is a skilled barber - someone who can make sure the hair feels soft despite its shorter length when styled with wax.

When it comes to the bangs, you’ve got options: spike them up for a bold look or run your fingers through them to create a natural, effortless vibe that falls onto the forehead.

This style is ideal for guys with long faces, as the moderate length helps balance the face's proportions. It’s also great for those with thinner hair - the spiky, slightly tousled finish adds volume and thickness naturally.

Messy Pompadour

The messy pompadour is a "fun" take on the original, where instead of the classic slicked-back look, the top hair is deliberately tousled for a laid-back feel.

It’s easy to pull off: keep the length of the bangs like a standard pompadour (typically down to the nose), but thin them out for easier styling. To get that tousled look, all you need is a wide-tooth comb (to create larger strands) and a spritz of Sea Salt Spray before using your main styling product.

However, considering the coarse hair texture many Vietnamese men have and the constant helmet-wearing, this style might be best saved for special occasions or as an occasional switch-up. To be ready for a quick change, just make sure to regularly thin and maintain the length on top.

Messy Quiff

The quiff is an easy, go-to hairstyle for almost anyone, mainly because it doesn't require a lot of time to grow out. All you need is about 4-5 cm of length on the bangs. Depending on your face shape, you can style the bangs differently - side-swept for longer faces to reduce length, or spiked up for rounder faces to create a more elongated look.

For a messy quiff, have your bangs and top hair cut into spikes or layers. The key is in the styling: apply wax evenly to your palms, then use your fingers to work it through the hair from root to tip. When it comes to the bangs - being the centerpiece of the look - use your palms to shape them however you want: side-swept, diagonally, or spiked.

A Final Tip for Tousled Hair: Always opt for styling products with a matte or low-shine finish. Messy hair looks its best when it appears natural. Shiny products can easily give off the wrong vibe, making it seem like you just stepped out of the shower with wet hair!
