Avoid These Common Grooming Mistakes to Look Your Best!

“Grooming” encompasses all the aspects of a man’s appearance, including skincare, shaving, hairstyling, and more. Each person has their own unique grooming routine tailored to one goal: to stay fresh and polished throughout the day. However, because grooming is typically a solo endeavor - just you and your bathroom mirror - mistakes are bound to happen without some guidance.

This article highlights the most prevalent grooming errors men tend to make. By the end, you’ll be better equipped to refine your daily routine and minimize those pesky “accidents.” Let’s get started!

Shaving Before Showering

Shaving is a regular task for many men, but have you ever wondered why some areas of your beard are particularly stubborn? Pressing harder with the razor can lead to painful cuts and nicks. Before you blame your razor or shaving cream, consider that you might be shaving before stepping into the shower. Warm water helps soften the skin and open the pores, allowing the razor to glide more easily. Shaving after a warm shower makes the whole process smoother and more effective.

Personally, I often shave while in the shower, which eliminates the need for a mirror since I’m already familiar with my beard's growth patterns. It’s quick and efficient! 😌

Rushing Through Shaving

Do you think that moving the razor quickly will give you a cleaner shave? 🤪 Rushing through this process typically results in redness, skin abrasions, and bleeding. Take your time, and shave slowly and steadily - there’s no need to rush.

Neglecting Proper Tooth Brushing

You might feel confident in your tooth-brushing abilities, but let's face it: many of us weren’t taught how to brush effectively 😢. As kids, we were often bribed or forced to complete our oral hygiene routine twice a day.

Make sure to brush for at least two minutes, regardless of whether you use a manual or electric toothbrush. Brush in small circles, making sure to cover every surface—inside and outside. A key point many might overlook: hold the brush at an angle rather than perpendicular to your teeth for a more effective clean.

Overdoing the Cologne

It’s easy to think that your fragrance has faded, but often it’s just that your brain has adjusted to it, making it feel like your body’s natural scent. While your nose might not detect it anymore, those around you will. The ideal spots to apply cologne are your elbows, neck, and behind your ears. These pulse points generate heat, which helps to diffuse the fragrance.

While wrists are also pulse points, they often come into contact with shirt sleeves, jackets, and other surfaces, making them less than ideal for cologne application.

Disregarding the Hair Dryer

A hair dryer is an excellent tool for styling your hair that can save time and add natural volume, especially for those with thinner hair. Don’t overlook this handy device!

Trying Out Different Barbers

I get the urge to experiment, but save that curiosity for your wardrobe, not your hair 😢. While you can easily swap out an outfit if it doesn’t work, a bad haircut is something you’ll have to live with. Barbers need two to three visits to learn your hair texture, growth direction, and personal preferences. Expecting them to nail it on the first try is a tall order.

The picture is just a threat 😆

If you’re satisfied with your current barber, stick with them! Want to try a new hairstyle? Return to your regular barber for a change. If you must venture out, communicate your ideas clearly, using descriptions and reference images.

Growing Long Nails

I’ve often wondered why some guys choose to grow long nails 🥶. I don’t see the appeal in having one or two long nails that tend to look yellow and curved. It’s impractical and unsanitary.

There’s an old belief that long nails indicate a lack of hard work, suggesting someone comes from a wealthy background. That trend needs to change! Even the rich work hard and wear down their hands - now that’s the real trend!

Sticking with the Same Products for Years

Have you been using the same grooming products for ages? Your shampoo and conditioner may not be as effective as they once were. Hair and skin change over time, so there’s no need to remain “loyal” to old products. This is also a great chance to try new options and upgrade to something better.

Using Excess Hair Wax

We’ve all made the mistake of using too much hair product. Overdoing it with wax, pomade, or styling products can weigh down your hair, causing it to lose shape - especially if you wear a helmet. Use just the right amount of wax: warm it in your palms, apply it from back to front, and style. If you need more, add it in small increments rather than starting from scratch.
