For the past week, hair styling enthusiasts have been buzzing about one name: Blumaan. This brand is the brainchild of Joseph Andrews, the creator of the YouTube channel Blumaan, where he showcases his hair through styling tips and product reviews.
Last year, Blumaan announced the launch of a wax named after himself, creating a wave of excitement among fans. But there was a catch - everyone had to wait a nail-biting nine months to get their hands on what was being hailed as “magical.” So, does Blumaan live up to the hype?
Packaging Design
I must admit, my initial impression of Blumaan's packaging isn't the best. While it employs a straightforward black-and-white color scheme paired with an eye-catching font, the design feels reminiscent of By Vilain’s early days (though I’m unsure if they’ve improved since then). Blumaan’s packaging features decals on the lid, body, and bottom, which are likely to peel and fade over time.
That said, since this is a debut product, we can afford to be lenient and hope for future improvements. Anyone invested in hair styling knows the thrill of owning a product that looks as good on the outside as it performs.
Additionally, alongside the English instructions from Blumaan, 91S Store has thoughtfully included a Vietnamese translation.
Wax Texture and Fragrance
Original by Blumaan is an opaque white wax that is pliable and quite sticky (similar to By Vilain Gold Digger). It melts easily when rubbed between the palms and features a very subtle mint scent. This fragrance is short-lived, almost disappearing after styling, which is a plus for me, as I prefer unscented products.
The ease with which the wax melts often suggests it will wash out easily, and indeed, after using Blumaan, I found that cleaning my hands and hair felt significantly simpler compared to other waxes with similar beeswax content, like Hanz de Fuko Claymation.
Styling
I like to style my hair based on my mood, which is why I can easily switch from a pompadour to a more relaxed short style without hesitation. This flexibility allowed me to test Blumaan in a somewhat unconventional manner.
My coarse, unruly hair typically requires Hanz de Fuko Claymation for a pompadour. However, two days before cutting my hair short, I managed to test Blumaan on hair long enough to reach my nose (unfortunately, no photos were taken).
I found that for longer hair styled classically, Blumaan performs quite well—offering several strengths, but nothing overly exceptional. I initially used about two fingertip amounts for pre-styling with a blow dryer, followed by another fingertip’s worth for finishing. The result? Volume similar to Hanz de Fuko Claymation (around 80%), with a slightly sticky feel each time I ran my fingers through my hair. The texture was good, with clear definition in the hair strands.
However, Blumaan’s ability to “reset” hair after wearing a helmet is only moderately effective. After about 20 minutes under a helmet, ruffling my hair showed some fading in texture, though the hold remained strong. By the end of the day, some strands did begin to droop or fall.
Blumaan is particularly suitable for short hair with a thick, coarse texture like mine. In the photo, I simply applied the product evenly without much additional styling.
With my current short, messy haircut (about 3-4cm long), Blumaan truly shines. No need for extensive pre-styling like with a pompadour; I blow-dry my hair, evenly distribute the wax between my palms, and then work it into my hair vigorously. Despite a slight stickiness, Blumaan quickly “grabs” the hair, allowing for easy manipulation to achieve the desired texture. For my style, I sweep the fringe slightly to the right while confidently tousling the rest until I achieve the perfect look.
The texture remains soft and light.
Blumaan offers excellent texture for short hair, defining strands while maintaining a certain softness. The matte finish provides a natural appearance, almost as if no product was applied. The hold lasts well through a pompadour, making it a breeze to manage short hair; even after removing a helmet, a quick tousle is all that’s needed.
The strands look incredibly natural, and about 10 minutes after application, the hair dries to feel as if no product was used at all.
As my hair grows out, I’m eager to see how Blumaan performs. For now, it’s the perfect companion for my short, messy style. I confidently rate it 4.5/5 for short hair - a fresh product that still has room to grow and improve.
