If I wear it enough, it’s basically free... right?

The concept of "Cost Per Wear" (CPW) isn't new; it's been a staple among seasoned fashion aficionados for years. However, with the rise of TikTok, this theory is enjoying a renaissance, drawing fresh attention through engaging videos.

So, what exactly is CPW? It’s quite straightforward: take the price of a garment and divide it by the number of times you wear it. The lower the CPW, the smarter your purchase. For instance, if you snag a pair of pants for 2,000,000 VND and wear them three times a week, you’ll have worn them around 144 times by the end of the year. This brings your CPW down to approximately 14,000 VND per wear - less than a cup of coffee! That’s a solid investment compared to cheaper alternatives you might wear just a couple of times before they end up in the back of your closet.
Beyond mere numbers, CPW can evoke deeper philosophical and emotional reflections. An item might appear pricey at first glance, but if it serves you well for years and proves versatile, its cost diminishes over time. This principle is captured perfectly in the saying, “I’m too poor to buy cheap things.” Investing in high-quality pieces ensures that longevity aligns with their worth. Take denim and leather, for example: the more you wear them, the more character they gain, including the stories and memories that accompany those signs of wear and tear.
CPW also prompts a more mindful approach to your clothing and personal style. To achieve a low CPW, you should consider the quality of materials and stitching rather than simply following trends or what’s currently fashionable.
Ultimately, your emotional connection to a garment is paramount. You choose to bring an item into your life because of the joy it brings you when worn. When a piece fits just right and feels great, there’s no need to dwell on CPW - just enjoy wearing it and get the most out of your investment!
