I know, I’ve been preaching simplicity and versatility in style for ages now. And if you’ve been paying attention, you’ll notice I rarely use the word “fashion” in my articles. That’s because we’re about timeless style, not fleeting trends. But hey, knowing what’s trending isn’t such a bad thing. It’s like keeping tabs on the mood of the fashion world, seeing what top brands are pushing, and maybe sparking some new ideas for your own wardrobe. It’s all about knowing when to say “yes” and, even more importantly, when to say “nah, not for me” 😁.
Fashion runways are mirrors to society, so it's interesting to see how Fall/Winter 2021 has been influenced by a year of lockdowns, quarantine, and remote living. Let’s dive in.
Seeing Red
Why red? Designers may be trying to grab the attention of virtual audiences glued to laptops and TV screens (thanks to no in-person shows due to the pandemic), or maybe we all just need a vibrant jolt of energy after a rough year.
Knit Polo Shirts
Traditional shirts were nearly absent from runways this season. The reason? When are we wearing them? We’re lounging at home 😅. Enter long-sleeved knit polos - designed for comfort but still keeping you looking sharp in those virtual meetings.
Quarantine Chic
Ermenegildo Zegna, known for its classic menswear, threw a curveball by introducing dressing gowns that look straight out of a spa. Fendi followed suit with quilted fabrics, and Louis Vuitton models even strolled out in robes, coffee cup and newspaper in hand, capturing the ultimate “chilling at home” vibe.
Rubber Boots
Rubber boots took center stage this season, from Tod’s sleek interpretations to Dior’s military-inspired styles. The key to pulling this off? Tuck slim-fit trousers into the boots, then keep your top layers loose. I’m not sure I’ll jump on this trend, but you might give it a shot! 😆
The Trench Coat Returns
No surprise here - the classic trench coat is back. This year, designers favored oversized cuts while sticking to the timeless beige.
Sleeveless Knit Sweaters – A 90s Revival
Remember grandpa sweaters? They’re back, with everything from bold Fair Isle patterns to minimalist designs by Jil Sander and Issey Miyake. A nod to 90s style, but with a fresh twist.
Suiting, But Not Suits
Suits have taken a backseat this season, replaced by matching tops and bottoms made from the same material. It’s like the casual answer to formal wear - after all, who’s wearing a three-piece suit when working from home? 😆
Leather Overcoats
Leather overcoats are the statement piece of the season, bringing a bit of that Matrix vibe back to the streets. Oversized, dramatic, and undeniably cool. 😅
Mini Crossbody Bags
With international travel on hold, those oversized luggage-style bags are being swapped out for tiny crossbodies. These pint-sized bags are just enough to hold your essentials - phone, wallet, mask, and sanitizer.
Turtleneck Sweaters
Turtlenecks are everywhere, in a wide range of materials and colors. This year, neutral tones are still leading the charge. A classic that’ll never go out of style.
Patterned Sweaters
Designers have gone all out with cheerful patterns on oversized sweaters. These playful designs seem like an attempt to lift our spirits after being cooped up indoors for so long.
Camel Tones
Top-rated looks for Fall/Winter 2021 are drenched in camel tones - a nod to Pantone’s “Illuminating Yellow,” one of the year’s standout colors.
Trends may come and go, but knowing what’s in can help refine your style game. Keep what works, and let go of what doesn’t.
