In a previous post, I touched on picking hairstyles for different face shapes. Today, let’s dig deeper into selecting hairstyles that complement various head shapes, or as barbers often call it, skull structure.
Everyone’s skull structure is unique. Those blessed with a well-rounded head shape are just as fortunate as those with an oval face. However, if you have a high forehead, flat or protruding nape, or a pointed crown, your hair’s job is to subtly mask and balance these so-called “imperfections.”
Here are some hairstyle tips and techniques to handle tricky head shapes:
High Forehead
If you've got a high forehead, avoid letting the sides grow vertically, as this will only draw more attention to your forehead’s height. Instead, keep the sides a bit longer and style your hair backward and to the side, creating a more "horizontal" look that balances out the forehead.
Your bangs should have volume, so skip the slick-back style that’s too tight to the scalp. Opt for a pompadour, quiff, or short, side-swept bangs. If you're into simplicity, slightly loose bangs that hug the forehead are perfect for hiding a high forehead, and they work especially well during the winter.
Pointed Crown
Many think longer hair on top can cover a pointed crown, but that’s a myth. Growing your hair too long up there only adds height to the peak. You’ll want an undercut with the sides and back cropped short.
Keep the top neatly trimmed and grow out your bangs long enough so that when styled back, they create a thick "shield" to mask that pointed crown.
Protruding Nape
Balance is key here. Thin out the hair at the nape while keeping the hair in front longer and fuller. Think of spiked hairstyles or messy tops, as they’ll create the weight needed to offset the protruding nape.
Flat Nape
On the flip side, if you have a flat nape, you’ll need to thicken the hair at the back. The sides should have enough length to create balance. Go for side-part, slick-back, or pompadour hairstyles for the best results.
Low Forehead
Guys with low foreheads need to go for volume. You need to create the illusion of height, so longer hairstyles with a backward styling (without being too slicked-back) will do the trick.
If you’re up for something bold, a French crop with more volume at the top is a solid choice. And for extra flair, consider adding some soft curls for volume.
Whether it’s a high forehead or a flat nape, the right hairstyle can work wonders. It’s all about balance, volume, and playing to your strengths.
