How to Dress Well with a Muscular Build: Style Tips for the Gym-Honed Guy

First things first - let’s clear something up. Being muscular is a whole different game than being overweight. This guide is specifically for those guys who’ve put in the hard work, built up their muscles, and are dealing with the challenge of broad shoulders and a big frame. If you’ve ever struggled to find clothes that fit your physique just right, especially when most gym and athlete-focused brands stop at L or XL, then this is for you.

So, after your workout and while sipping that protein shake, check out these tips to make sure your wardrobe works as hard as you do.

Nail the Fit

One common mistake muscular guys make is going for oversized clothes to hide their bulk. Why hide what you’ve worked so hard for? Embrace it! Just remember that sizing varies from brand to brand. You might be an “L” in one store and a “M” in another, so try before you buy. Find clothes that highlight your muscles without being too tight - fitted looks will emphasize your strong arms and build without going overboard.

Stick to Neutral Tones

When you’re already rocking a strong physique, you don’t need loud colors to stand out. Stick to classic neutrals like black, gray, navy, and white. Save the bold colors like orange and lime green for more casual, beachy outings. Earth tones like olive, camel, and brown also complement muscular frames, especially when choosing outerwear.

Layering the Right Way

With your wide frame, you don’t need heavy layers to add dimension. Opt for lightweight jackets and sweaters. Avoid chunky, cable-knit styles that can add unnecessary bulk, especially around the chest. In cooler weather, a slim-fitting long-sleeve shirt or turtleneck under a trench coat or leather jacket will keep you warm without overloading your look. Biker jackets, whether in leather or denim, are also excellent for an effortlessly cool vibe.

The Right Jeans

Forget about baggy pants; they’ll only hide the body you’ve worked so hard for. Instead, go for slim-fit jeans that aren’t too tight but still highlight your legs. Skinny jeans are a no-go - trust me, squeezing a big frame into skinny jeans is as awkward as it sounds. Think sleek and modern with slim or straight fits. 😦

Đồ may đo

Tailoring is Your Friend

A good tailor can make all the difference. Whether it’s custom suits or perfectly altered off-the-rack shirts, investing in tailored clothing ensures everything fits just right, from your arms to your chest and thighs.

Find Your Go-To Brand

Take the time to discover brands that suit your body type. In Vietnam, Gap is a good choice - its larger cuts are ideal for bigger frames. For reference, I’m 1.78m tall, weigh around 65kg, and typically wear an XS in Gap (S is also fine, but I prefer a more fitted look). Luxury brands often don’t cater well to muscular guys, so stick with mid-range options and splurge on accessories like watches or shoes instead.

Classic Over Trends

The safest bet for any wardrobe, muscular or not, is to keep things classic. Plain white tees, neutral sweaters, well-fitted jeans, khakis, and chinos are timeless and look great on any physique. There’s no need to chase trends when simple, well-made pieces will always have you looking sharp.

Outfit Ideas

  • Jackets: Shorter jackets like bombers or Harringtons are great for accentuating a “V” shape. Materials like cotton keep the look sharp, while polyester blends can subtly highlight your frame.

  • Cardigans/Sweaters: Cardigans add a touch of class without adding bulk. Lightweight cashmere is an excellent choice for staying warm in style during winter.

  • Suits: Avoid double-breasted jackets, as they can make your chest look even broader. Stick to simpler patterns and lighter fabrics like linen for a sleek, breathable option.

  • Pants: Slim or straight-fit pants are your go-to. Ditch the skinny and baggy pants - neither will do your legs justice.

  • T-shirts: Henley shirts, with their button details at the chest, are a favorite among muscular men like Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans for a reason - they fit perfectly with a V-shaped upper body.

  • Shoes: Wing-tip brogues add balance to your proportions, while bold-colored sneakers give you room to play with your footwear.
