Buying nice clothes is just step one. Knowing how to care for them is equally important. I’ve personally messed up more than a few shirts by hanging them the wrong way, especially fresh out of the wash. It’s time to get serious about hanging clothes the right way!
Hangers with Shoulder Support
These are the best of the best. In Western countries, they can go for about $30 a pop. Luckily, here in Vietnam, you can grab them at wooden hanger specialty shops for around 60,000 VND each. They’re not cheap, but they’re worth it because they do an excellent job of preserving your clothes’ shape.
These hangers usually have a horizontal bar underneath for pants, and the good ones come with anti-slip features to keep your trousers from sliding off. If you’ve got suits, these hangers are a must-have.
Ideally, you’d use these for almost all your shirts, but for cost reasons, it’s better to reserve them for suits, blazers, wool coats, and felt coats- basically, anything expensive that’s prone to losing its shape on regular hangers.
The thick shoulder design helps maintain the structure of your garments like a pro.
Regular Plastic Hangers
These are the everyday go-tos. You can use them for shirts, polos, pants - anything that doesn’t require special care or isn’t super pricey. Then, there are thin metal hangers, which you should avoid. They bend easily and can leave ugly marks on the shoulders of your clothes.
Specialized Pants Hangers
These hangers come with two clips designed specifically for dress pants, which need a little extra care when it comes to ironing and maintaining their shape. If your wardrobe leans more toward jeans and chinos, you can skip these.
But if you’re a dress pants guy, these hangers are your best friend.
Items You Shouldn’t Hang
Sweaters and T-shirts should never be hung. Hangers can stretch them out or leave marks on the shoulders. Instead, fold these items and stack them neatly in your drawer or closet.
How to Hang Clothes After Washing
Aside from dry-clean-only pieces like suits and wool coats, you’ll be air-drying most of your clothes. Stay away from clothespins - they can leave unsightly marks, especially on T-shirts and sweaters.
Sure, clothespins look harmless, but they can leave lasting marks on your clothes.
