Sitting Right: Techniques for Correct Posture

Updated: Oct 9, 2024

"Please have a seat!" It’s a common invitation, but do you know how to sit down like a true gentleman?

In job interviews or important meetings, every gesture and movement counts. How you sit can significantly impact your impression, helping you project confidence and poise.

Approach the Chair with Confidence

Don’t fixate on the chair - just walk over with a calm demeanor. Act as if you’re a guest entering someone’s home for the first time, rather than someone on a covert mission. Confidence in your approach speaks volumes.

Unbutton Your Suit/Blazer Jacket

Before you sit, unbutton your jacket. Sitting with it buttoned up will cause wrinkles and make you look disheveled. An unbuttoned jacket ensures you maintain a crisp appearance, avoiding the impression of someone who can’t quite manage their attire.

Gently Pull Up Your Pants Before Sitting Down

Touch the back of the chair lightly with your thigh to gauge your spot. It’s better to be cautious than to embarrass yourself by misjudging your position. Adjust your pant legs slightly to avoid stretching or wrinkling, then sit with your back straight and aligned with the chair.

Be Comfortable but Not Overly So

Keep your legs forming a right angle to the ground with your knees slightly apart. Rest your hands palms down on your thighs or clasped together in the center. Avoid drumming your hands, shaking your legs, or making excessive movements. Such habits can signal nervousness and lack of confidence.

Re-Button Your Jacket Right After Standing Up

As you rise, place one hand on the armrest and use the other to re-button your jacket. This small touch ensures you leave with the same polished appearance you entered with.

Pull Out the Chair for Women

Chivalry is timeless. While women can manage on their own, a true gentleman will pull out the chair for the woman on his right. If there’s no one beside the woman on your left, extend the gesture to both if possible.

By following these straightforward tips, you’ll present yourself as elegant, courteous, and confident in any formal or social setting.
