When it comes to fragrances, I’m often more drawn to the bottle design, the packaging, and the overall aesthetic rather than the scent itself. It’s a tempting trap - one that I’m fully aware of but still happily fall for. You know the saying, “Don’t judge a book by its cover,” but so far, I haven’t been disappointed by what’s inside these beautiful bottles.
REPLICA At the Barber’s, from Maison Martin Margiela, takes inspiration from the nostalgic atmosphere of classic barbershops.
The REPLICA collection by Maison Martin Margiela is all about evoking memories and experiences through scent. Whether it's the crackling warmth of By The Fireplace, the vibrant energy of Jazz Club, or the laid-back vibes of Lazy Sunday Morning, each fragrance tells its own story. The one that caught my attention, though, was At The Barber’s. I was curious - how could they bottle the feeling of a barbershop?
On paper, At the Barber’s opens with top notes of basil and black pepper, followed by heart notes of lavender and rosemary, finishing with base notes of tonka bean and leather. Honestly, if you’re anything like me, you might find that combination a bit odd at first glance. My initial thought was, “How does any of that make sense?” But after giving it a try, I embarked on a truly intriguing journey with this fragrance. With scents, it’s all about personal experience - no one knows better than you what resonates.
The bottle itself has a vintage feel, featuring a fabric tag with typewriter-style font - a perfect nod to nostalgia.
The first note that hits you is the unmistakable scent of basil, which is quickly softened by a hint of citrus. Basil, basil, basil... What does it remind me of? Then it clicks - Barbicide! You know, that iconic blue disinfectant solution barbers use to soak their tools.
It’s like the start of the day in a barbershop, as the barber retrieves gleaming scissors and razors from the Barbicide jar, ready for a fresh batch of customers.
Starting off with that crisp, clean Barbicide-like scent is a clever touch. After about an hour or so (maybe quicker if you’re like me and sweat a lot), a subtle lavender aroma starts to emerge. It reminds me of the moment when the barber whips up shaving cream, lathering it on with a brush in preparation for the classic hot towel shave.
Then, out of nowhere, comes the warm, luxurious scent of leather - a truly captivating finale.
The scent deepens with a warm mix of tonka bean and leather. You’re sitting in the comfort of a leather chair, eyes closed as the barber works, surrounded by the soothing smells of essential oils, the rhythmic glide of the razor, and soft music playing in the background.
You might think a fragrance like this would be random, but At The Barber’s unfolds in a surprisingly logical and satisfying way. For me, every note flows in a perfectly timed sequence.
You can grab a bottle at Sephora, or check out stores in Vietnam that sell authentic fragrances like ALAND, Gia Perfumerie, or Rosa Perfume.
