Not too long ago, blazers were a mystery to many men, with some even thinking they could only be worn as part of a full suit. But let’s simplify things: a blazer is a jacket similar to a suit jacket but softer in both material and design. Most modern blazers feature minimal or no shoulder padding (known as unstructured), offering a lightweight yet sharp look. The versatility of a blazer is unmatched - you can wear it with shirts, t-shirts, jeans, chinos, and even sneakers!
It’s encouraging to see more men embracing blazers as part of their everyday wardrobes. As Fall and Winter approach, this trend will only grow stronger.
If you’re in the market for the perfect blazer, I might not be able to list out all the stores for you here in Vietnam, but I can guide you on what to look for when choosing one. Consider this your go-to blazer buying guide. 😉
How Many Buttons?
Blazers come with different button options - one, two, three, or even the double-breasted style.
One-button blazers are more casual and look sleek when fastened.
Two-button blazers are the classic go-to. If it’s your first blazer, start here. A key tip: only fasten the top button! Never button the bottom one, as it can cause the upper part of the jacket to bunch awkwardly. A well-fitted two-button blazer elongates the torso.
Three-button blazers are great for taller men. You can leave the top button undone, but the middle button should always be fastened for structure.
Double-breasted blazers are making a comeback, offering just the right amount of novelty without straying too far from the traditional blazer look. For a relaxed vibe, fasten the middle button and leave the bottom one undone.
Choosing the Right Material
Material choice is just as important as the button style. The most versatile fabrics include:
Cotton pique is a breathable, lightweight fabric perfect for mixing and matching.
Linen is ideal for warmer climates, offering a breezy, laid-back style.
Polyester-wool blends are also worth considering, as they’re light, breathable, and versatile. Don’t assume wool equals heavy or hot - high-quality wool blends are surprisingly airy and comfortable. The only downside? They can be a bit pricier.
For colder seasons, velvet or corduroy blazers are stylish choices. Opt for dark navy or burgundy shades, and pair them with gray pants or dark jeans for a sharp look.
Getting the Fit Right
Fit is everything when it comes to blazers. Aim for a slim-fit jacket that hugs the body just right, but still allows for comfortable shoulder movement.
Avoid those ultra-short blazers that barely reach the waist - trust me, they don’t deserve to be called blazers. While there’s no strict length rule, a blazer should ideally cover the fullest part of your backside. As for the sleeves, when standing straight, about 1 cm of your shirt cuff should be visible.
Styling Your Blazer
A well-fitted blazer can be paired with just about anything. For a timeless everyday look, try a navy blazer with a white Oxford shirt, gray cuffed trousers, and classic black or brown Oxford shoes.
For a romantic night out, consider a light gray blazer with black trousers and a white button-down shirt (one with collar buttons). A colorful pocket square can add an extra touch of charm.
