Mastering the Military-Inspired Look

Calling military fashion a "trend" might be underselling it. In fact, you’ve probably been wearing pieces with military influence for years without even noticing.

This style is particularly familiar to those who appreciate a rugged, masculine vibe. Personally, I think military-inspired fashion is perfect for the winter months, with iconic items like trench coats, cargo pants, and durable boots standing up to the cold in style. How many military-style pieces do you already own?

Trench Coat

The trench coat, originally designed by Burberry, is one of the most versatile outerwear options out there. Over the years, it has spread across fashion lines from luxury to budget brands. Check out collections from Zara, H&M, and French Connection, and you'll see trench coats making their appearance year after year, with only minor updates to the designs.

A trench coat pairs effortlessly with almost anything - from a shirt and tie to casual jeans or chinos. Just stay away from wearing one with shorts. A dark green trench coat is a staple of the military aesthetic, but they also stand out in beige, navy blue, or black.

Bomber Jacket

Originally created to keep pilots warm, the bomber jacket has found a comfortable place in everyday fashion. What defines a bomber jacket? Its round collar, ribbed cuffs, stretchy waistband, and often a small zippered pocket on the sleeve.

Since it became a staple, the bomber jacket has evolved in many ways. Now, you can find versions in wool, with shearling collars, or packed with extra zippers for added style.

Pea Coat

The pea coat is another military-born classic, hailing from 19th-century naval uniforms. This double-breasted, button-heavy coat became a popular choice for men’s fashion after World War II. Its roots show in the unmistakable navy blue color it’s often seen in today.

If you're in the market for a pea coat, look for one with a high wool content. The warmer the coat, the more it'll cost - but it’s an investment piece that will last.

Cargo Pants

Cargo pants bring that rugged, functional edge to the military look. But forget about those outdated, bulky-pocketed versions from the past. Modern cargo pants are sleeker, with more subtle pockets that add just the right amount of flair. Their versatility even allows them to be paired with a blazer for a more refined look.

Remember, though, the pockets are mostly for show—overstuffing them will ruin the clean lines of your outfit.

Boots

No military look is complete without a solid pair of boots. But you need balance - pairing combat boots with a bomber jacket and cargo pants can tip the scale towards overkill. Instead, mix your boots with jeans or chinos, throw on a tee or shirt, and top it off with a trench coat for a polished, balanced military-inspired ensemble.
