Pomade, Wax, and Gel: What's the Difference?

Men’s hairstyling products have hit an all-time high in popularity. Nowadays, guys are paying more attention to their hair and fashion than ever before. I’ve noticed that whenever a group of friends gathers, the conversation inevitably turns to hair - what styles they’re trying out, and what products they’re using.

For those of you just getting into the world of hairstyling, welcome! Don’t feel shy about it. Taking care of your hair isn’t just about looking good; it’s a form of self-respect. I remember back in middle and high school, we only had one product to talk about: gel. But now, things have evolved, and there are tons of new options. In this article, I’ll walk you through the three most common products: pomade, wax, and gel. Knowing the differences will help you make the best choice for your hair. 😉

Pomade

Pomade stands out from other products because it leaves a shiny finish. It comes in two main types: water-based and oil-based. Water-based pomade is easy to apply and wash out, though it often has a weaker hold. That said, newer products like Reuzel Blue (officially available in Vietnam through Barbaard) are changing the game with improved hold. On the other hand, oil-based pomades provide strong hold but can be a hassle to wash out.

Reuzel pomade is now officially distributed in Vietnam through Barbaard.

Barbers and hairstylists often recommend pomade for classic looks like the slick back or pompadour. If you’ve got dry hair, pomade is perfect for adding a little shine without making your hair look too greasy. One of the great things about pomade is that you can restyle your hair throughout the day using just a comb or your fingers - no need to reapply.

Another bonus? Pomade usually comes with a warm, distinctive scent that sets it apart from other styling products.

Wax

While pomade is ideal for those classic styles, wax (or "sáp" in Vietnamese) is incredibly versatile and works with just about any hairstyle. Unlike pomade, which maintains that shiny look, wax dries after a few hours, giving your hair a more natural finish. And just like pomade, if your style gets messed up during the day, you can easily fix it with your fingers.

Wax is a solid choice no matter your hair length or style - whether you’re going for a polished look or something more tousled. Clay, a variation of wax, is particularly popular these days because of its strong hold. It’s perfect for slick backs, pompadours, and side parts, offering that structured look without the shine.

Speaking of shine, wax comes in different levels, from matte to very shiny, though it never quite reaches the glossy finish of pomade. Still, the range of options in the wax world makes it the go-to for guys looking to experiment with different styles.

Gel

Gel takes me back to the "good old days." I’m sure a lot of you have used gel before, especially since it used to be one of the few hairstyling options available.

Gel is a bit old-school, giving your hair a rock-hard, super shiny finish that could almost cut glass. It works best on very short hair, creating a stiff, defined look. The downside is that once you’ve styled your hair with gel, there’s no going back—you can’t restyle it like you can with wax or pomade.
