Since diving headfirst into the world of hairstyling products, I’ve been lucky enough to try out some of the best and most talked-about items on the market. It feels like a new adventure every time a top-tier brand sends over their latest and greatest products. One of the perks of the job! Hanz de Fuko’s Claymation has become my go-to for my thick and rebellious hair - an absolute game-changer.
However, I’m the type who enjoys experimenting with new products. Once, I was convinced that By Vilain’s Dynamite or Gold Digger would be my forever favorites (longtime followers know how I used to rave about them). That said, By Vilain is still a top-tier wax brand with nearly flawless performance, but my curiosity keeps pulling me toward new experiences.
Traditionally, I’ve steered clear of pomades, particularly the oil-based kind. While they deliver great hold, washing them out can be a nightmare. Water-based pomades are easier to rinse out, but they usually lack the lasting power my hair needs.
That’s when I got my hands on Reuzel’s trio of pomades, sent directly from the master barbers at Schorem. It was clear that these products were crafted with years of barbering experience behind them. Although I appreciated the superior hold of the pink Reuzel, it just couldn’t compete with my love for waxes after a week of use.
For me, oil-based pomades leave a sticky, greasy residue even after washing, which I hate. On the other hand, the red Reuzel (water-based) didn’t offer enough hold for my thick hair.
Then came the game-changer: Reuzel Blue. It’s water-based with stronger hold properties, which the folks at Schorem humorously described as “Reuzel Red on steroids.” Naturally, I couldn’t wait to give it a spin.
Not long after, my wish came true. The guys over at Barbaard - Reuzel’s official distributor in Vietnam - sent me a massive 12oz tin of Reuzel Blue. I want to give a big shout-out to the two Dutchmen who took a chance on building their careers here. A 12oz tin is seriously the size of a small dish!
The 12oz Reuzel tin is as big as a soup bowl!
The first thing that hit me about Reuzel Blue was the scent - a warm, smooth vanilla that fills the room as soon as you open the tin. The pomade itself has a much denser texture compared to Reuzel Red. When you scoop it out, you’ll immediately notice its stickiness.
Despite both being water-based, Reuzel Blue feels far more substantial than Reuzel Red.
For my medium-length quiff, Reuzel Blue provides a fantastic hold with just the right amount of shine. I’m not a fan of sharp comb lines, so after combing it into shape, I like to run my fingers through the front to give it a more natural finish.
After a full day’s wear, I’m impressed. It ticks all the boxes for a great pomade: Hold: 4/5, Shine: 4/5. Even after wearing a helmet or moving around, a quick finger-comb brings my style back to life.
Here’s the final result - please excuse the breakout on my forehead. Late nights have taken their toll 😅
Reuzel Blue leaves my hair feeling soft with a sleek, cohesive texture, holding up even in the heat without feeling greasy. If I’d been using Reuzel Red, my hair would’ve fallen flat by noon. The improved hold of Reuzel Blue is no joke.
I love how Reuzel Blue adds smoothness and definition to my hair without weighing it down.
Reuzel’s scent game is also on point: the red has a subtle cola fragrance, the green has a fresh apple-mint scent, the pink offers a classic apple pomade aroma, and the Blue has this incredible vanilla scent that’s so good, I’ve skipped wearing cologne more than once.
While wax remains my first love, Reuzel Blue is my go-to whenever I want to mix things up. It’s the perfect pomade for my needs.
For those looking to get their hands on Reuzel, Barbaard is close to making the product officially available in Vietnam. You can check out their website at http://www.barbaard.com (though online sales aren’t live yet). I’m also planning some exciting collaborations with Barbaard to bring Reuzel closer to my fellow classic hairstyle enthusiasts, especially fans of Schorem.
Tom and Guido, co-founders of Barbaard. I often joke that these two daring Dutch guys are brave enough to take on Vietnam all by themselves.
And stay tuned! I’ll be running a giveaway soon, featuring none other than Reuzel Blue 😉
