The Messy Haircut: A Modern Take on the Undercut

Messy haircuts are a versatile choice, fitting men of all ages and hair types. But don’t mistake this style for a sloppy, disheveled look - this is a controlled, intentional mess! It’s about creating a style that looks effortless but still polished.

Messy haircuts have been around for ages, but like all trends, they evolve with time. Every time this style makes a comeback, it gets a fresh update to match modern tastes.

The ideal hair length for a messy haircut? It’s hard to say exactly since different lengths create unique messy effects (and no, you can’t rock this look with a buzz cut). Your barber will need to cut the top layers unevenly to achieve that tousled texture. To keep things trendy, consider pairing this with closely cropped sides and back, much like an undercut. As for the bangs? That’s entirely your call - slick them back, sweep them to the side, or leave them naturally down. If you prefer the natural option, I recommend keeping the bangs about a finger’s width above your eyebrows.

Maintaining a messy haircut is easy - just a quick trip to the barber every 3-4 weeks should keep things fresh. If you’re the type to put off haircuts, ask your barber to trim the sides extra short to buy yourself some time before the style loses its edge.

Styling is simple too. Start by drying your hair while shaping it roughly into the desired form. Then, take a moderate amount of wax, rub it between your hands, and run it through your hair. The key here is the shaping - once you’ve got that messy, carefree look, the rest will naturally fall into place. Use your fingers to adjust the hair as needed.

I recommend using matte-effect waxes for this look since you want a natural, slightly rugged finish. Recently, I found an awesome matte product: Dynamite by By Vilain. It’s an indie brand from Denmark that’s pretty big in Europe, offering three main products - Gold Digger (super matte), Dynamite (medium hold), and Silver Fox (shiny). I’m loving the Dynamite wax I picked up; it’s super natural-looking, holds well, and washes out easily. It’s not the cheapest at £15 (about 450K VND through a local dealer), but honestly, it’s worth every penny for the results!
