The Sweatshirt: From Humble Beginnings to Everyday Greatness

Originally created to solve a problem for athletes - specifically rugby players - the sweatshirt has come a long way. Back in the 1920s, rugby uniforms were made from itchy, heavy wool, which wasn’t ideal for sweating. Enter the sweatshirt, designed to absorb sweat and provide comfort. What started as simple athletic wear has since transformed into a fashion staple, right up there with the white t-shirt, oxford shirt, and jeans.

Now, we're not diving into the flashy streetwear versions with bold logos or oversized fits. What you probably need is a basic, comfortable, and versatile sweatshirt that’ll work with most outfits. And honestly, that’s more than enough 😉.

What to Look for When Buying a Sweatshirt

Style

The classic sweatshirt is crewneck, and that’s the version you’ll find in most closets. Hoodies are popular too, but that’s a topic for another day. If versatility is your goal, stick to plain sweatshirts. A clean, minimal design will give you more outfit options. Want a little something extra? Subtle prints or logos are fine, just don't go overboard.

Fit

In my opinion, the key to a great sweatshirt is a standard, timeless fit. You want a sweatshirt that’s comfy, with a good fit around the shoulders, ribbed cuffs that rest snugly at the hips, and a length that just covers your waistband. While trends come and go, this simple fit will always look good.

Quality

When it comes to quality, it boils down to two things: material and stitching. Most high-quality sweatshirts are made from 100% cotton and often feature a loopback weave—smooth on the outside with tiny loops inside to absorb sweat. Some brands add a bit of cashmere for a luxe feel, but it’s not necessary to have that softness.

Be sure to check the elasticity of the ribbed cuffs and hems, as well as the stitching around the neckline, sleeves, and armpits. These small details make a big difference in how long your sweatshirt will last.

How to Style a Sweatshirt

The beauty of a sweatshirt is its versatility. Unlike a sweater, which often requires layering, a sweatshirt can easily be worn solo. Here are a few ways to style it:

  • Pair it with jeans, chinos, and sneakers to keep that sporty vibe.

  • Layer it over a denim shirt.

  • Throw on a biker jacket for a bit of edge.

  • Wear it like a sweater, layered over a button-up shirt.

  • Combine it with an overcoat for a more refined look.

  • Dress it up with a lightweight suit for a smart-casual style.

In Vietnam, I personally recommend Uniqlo sweatshirts for two reasons: price and quality. I own several, and after years of wear, they haven’t stretched out. Impressive, right? 😱

Globally, there are plenty of brands that make top-tier sweatshirts, including Champion, Sunspel, Asket, and Reigning Champ. I’ve tried them, and they’re all fantastic.

Know any local brands that make great sweatshirts? Let me know! I’d love to check them out 😁.
