While it's often said that shoes are the first thing people notice after your face, your hairstyle quickly comes into focus too. As the saying goes, "teeth and hair are the cornerstones of a person." Just like with clothing, some hairstyles are worth committing to because they never fall out of style.
Gentlemen, if you’re tired of constantly changing your haircut every month or week, it's time to settle on one or two "timeless" styles that will always keep you looking sharp.
Lightly Tousled Hair
This hairstyle is all about simplicity and convenience - you won’t even need a comb, and styling takes less than five minutes. All you need to do is maintain a casual, controlled messiness. A little wax rubbed between your palms and a quick scrunch through your hair, and you're set.
Lightly tousled hair works best for those with thicker hair, and it’s versatile whether you prefer shorter or slightly longer bangs. If you go shorter, you can style them upward. For longer bangs, ask your barber for a neat fringe cut, which you can wear naturally or sweep to the side.
French Crop
I've written about this style before because it just works for so many face shapes and hair types, especially if you have thinner bangs. The French crop is characterized by closely trimmed or shaved sides and back, with the longer, textured bangs left on top.
Whether you let the bangs hang straight or comb them to one side, this is a low-maintenance, classic look that suits men of all ages.
Buzz Cut
The buzz cut, also known as the crew cut, has survived every trend. It's a simple, masculine style that never fails to make a statement. However, pulling off this look requires a well-shaped, round head, particularly around the crown and nape, since the buzz cut leaves little to the imagination.
Today’s modern version often features slightly longer bangs that sit close to the forehead. Ask your barber to square off the edges or trim the hair above your temples for a more angular look.
Slick-back
A throwback to the 1920s, the slick-back was the go-to style for gentlemen of the time. Back then, men wore fedoras, and the slick-back kept their hair looking neat when the hat came off.
In recent years, this classic has returned, often paired with an undercut where the sides and back are shaved for a contemporary twist. The slick-back is best for guys with straight hair since the more curl you have, the harder it is to achieve that sleek look. If you have a high forehead or thinning hair, it’s better to opt for styles with bangs 😉.
To style a slick-back, keep your hair slightly damp. This makes it easier to comb back smoothly. Don’t worry if your first attempts aren’t perfect - practice makes it cleaner with time. Pomades work best for achieving that signature shine and hold.
Side-part
For an easier, more relaxed alternative to the slick-back, the side-part is a versatile option that works in any situation. Have your barber trim the sides and back close, while keeping the top long enough to create a noticeable part.
To style, apply product to damp hair and use a comb to create the part. After combing, run your fingers through the hair to give it a softer, more natural finish.
Pompadour
The pompadour might have started as a women’s hairstyle in 18th-century France, but it’s evolved into a staple of men’s fashion. Characterized by longer bangs swept back to create volume, today’s pompadour is modern and sleek.
The pompadour works best for those with thicker hair, and it can be adapted to various face shapes. If you have a long face, aim for a wider sweep, while a rounder face can benefit from an angled pompadour for extra definition. Ideally, your bangs should be around 7-8 cm for the perfect lift.
Quiff
Think of the quiff as the pompadour’s laid-back cousin. It requires less length and less styling effort. The bangs should be just long enough to comb to the side without standing up completely 😉.
There’s no exact science to the quiff, but generally, you want your barber to keep the sides and back shorter while leaving the bangs longer for that signature look. Make sure the hair at the crown is kept short to provide a solid base for the quiff.
