As we wrap up the year, let's look back at the significant milestones, names, brands, and trends that shaped men's fashion in 2015 😉
Ralph Lauren Steps Down as CEO
In November, Ralph Lauren, the iconic founder of the Polo brand, stepped down as CEO of his namesake company.
Despite this change, Lauren continues to serve as the Executive Chairman and Chief Creative Officer. He assured fans with a balanced statement: "When they start designing things I don't understand, I'll step aside. But I haven't felt the need to do so, at least not yet."
The New Era of Sneakers
This year saw the rise of versatile sneakers, perfect for pairing with any outfit. Brands like Common Projects, Maison Margiela, Filling Pieces, and Axel Arigato gained prominence alongside classics like Adidas Stan Smith, Converse Chuck Taylors, and Vans Authentics.
Harry Styles!
2015 was a style evolution year for One Direction's Harry Styles. Known for his bold patterns and unique flair, Styles balanced colors and shapes expertly, earning him a nod from me for daring to be different.
Turtleneck Comeback
The turtleneck made a stylish return, seen in "The Man From U.N.C.L.E," "Mad Men," and Drake's "Hotline Bling" video. Today's turtlenecks, often paired with suits and leather jackets, feature sleek, smooth collars, far from the classic Steve Jobs look.
Kanye West and Yeezy
Kanye West continued to lead trends with his Yeezy collection, characterized by a military-inspired, rugged, oversized aesthetic. From $2,000 sweatshirts to $550 Duck Boots, Kanye's designs drove global frenzy, proving everything he touches turns to gold.
The Comfort Trend in Clothing
After seasons of form-fitting clothes, men's fashion embraced comfort in 2015. Brands like Acne and Harris Wharf promoted soft, loose-fitting coats, while Our Legacy and Ovadia & Sons featured pants with elasticated waists and straight, if not wide, legs. Classic pleated trousers also made a comeback.
Streetwear Takes a Material Step Forward
Streetwear saw a shift in 2015, with brands like Supreme leading the charge with Angora wool sweaters and Loro Piana fabric jackets and pants. Brendon Babenzien, former Creative Director of Supreme, launched the streetwear brand Noah, focusing on premium materials like cashmere, Japanese flannel, and wool.
Gender-Neutral Fashion
Brands like Acne Studios and Hood By Air made significant strides in gender-neutral fashion. Acne Studios featured its Creative Director's 11-year-old son in an ad campaign wearing high heels and a pink coat. Selfridges opened a gender-neutral store in London, where customers can shop without gender distinctions.
Lemaire x Uniqlo: Affordable Minimalist Fashion
French designer Christophe Lemaire collaborated with Uniqlo, offering affordable minimalist fashion. This partnership was hailed as Uniqlo's most impressive since their +J collection with Jil Sander. Balmain x H&M also deserves mention, continuing H&M's tradition of notable collaborations.
Shoe of the Year: Chelsea Boots
Chelsea boots were a major trend in 2015, popularized by style icons like Kanye West, who frequently wore suede Chelsea boots in beige, gray, and brown from brands like Common Projects and Bottega Veneta. These boots became widely popular across various brands and price points.
