I just got back from a long business trip in Ho Chi Minh City, and the moment I stepped off the plane at Noi Bai Airport, that crisp October chill hit me - winter is on the way!
Around this time of year, many guys start thinking about picking up a winter coat. Some of you may have already jumped the gun and grabbed one. But let’s be honest - a good coat is an investment, and because it’s made from higher-end materials, buying the right one should be a priority. Just because something's expensive doesn’t automatically mean it’s high quality.
Based on my own experience, here are a few tips I want to share with you when it comes to choosing a winter coat. I also plan to spend more time checking out different stores in Hanoi (and Ho Chi Minh City when I can!) to scout for great finds and bring my readers better recommendations.
Oh, and heads up - beige is predicted to be a hot trend this year!
Think Long-Term
When I buy a coat, I want it to last - at least two years. I’m sure many of you agree that quality is key here. Coats are like other wardrobe staples I recommend investing in, such as wallets, watches, and belts. Be cautious of coats made from cheaper synthetic fabrics. They might be easy on the wallet, but will they hold up? Opt for wool, felt, or genuine leather for long-lasting durability.
As for style, you’ll never regret choosing a simple, classic design. Few people feel inspired to wear a flashy, overly detailed coat after the first season, while a timeless piece can be worn year after year and paired with different outfits.
Make Sure It Fits Over Your Layers
Since your coat is the outermost layer, you’ll be wearing it over sweaters, shirts, and other layers. Sometimes it’s worth sizing up, depending on the style. When trying one on, if you’re already feeling tight in the shoulders or arms with just a single layer underneath, consider going up a size to avoid any regrets later.
Choose Warm, High-Quality Materials
Wool, felt, and leather are the go-to materials for winter. There are also plenty of coats with detachable features like vests and hoods, which can add some versatility. It’s always good to be practical, especially when you're dealing with unpredictable weather.
Pay Attention to the Details
Check those pockets thoroughly, both inside and out, to ensure they’re functional and comfortable. Look for coats that come with spare buttons, and be sure to store them in a safe place after purchase.
You’ll thank yourself if you ever lose one. There’s nothing worse than mismatched buttons ruining the look of a great coat!
